Operated by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, John F Kennedy International Airport is located 15 miles southeast of Manhattan. The airport’s main runway is 4,442 metres in length and has a surface that is asphalt/concrete.
John F Kennedy Airport handles over 30 million passengers annually, making it New York's busiest, and justifying the nine terminals it has. The airport is home to more than 80 different airline companies providing both domestic and international flights. JFK Airport is situated around 15 miles to the southeast of downtown Manhattan, in the borough of Queens, and provides first class facilities for travellers no matter where they may be going.
The airport originally opened in the late 1940’s, when it was known as New York International Airport, the name change coming in 1963 in commemoration of the renowned president John F Kennedy. Since then it has benefited from ongoing development and expansion, most significantly for passengers from overseas the excellent International Terminal 4. There has also been significant investment in the transportation infrastructure, as seen with the new road systems and the much appreciated light rail network.
Driving Directions
Both the JFK and Van Wyck Expressways head straight into the Central Terminal Area of New York’s JFK International Airport. Look out for the colour coded signposts on both the Expressways that point out the correct places to park for each terminal.
New York JFK Airport from Manhattan
Follow the Belt Parkway East to exit 19 then take the Van Wyck Expressway to the airport.
New York JFK Airport from New Jersey
Taking the New Jersey Turnpike to exit 14C, the Holland Tunnel is the best route, then heading south on West Streetand from there to the Belt Parkway.
New York JFK Airport from Eastern Long Island
Follow the Belt Parkway West to exit 20 and then the JFK Expressway right to the airport.
New York JFK Airport from Upstate New York
Head south on I-87, taking the exit at 278 East. From there stay on the 278 until the exit for 495 East, leaving that for the Van Wyck Expressway.
